keep your friends fat... and your enemies thinner?

Hot article on the MSN homepage today...
States  "two-thirds of adult American women fall into the overweight or obese category, according to their BMIs."  (ehem, myself included in the overweight category).

Ok, so really, that information doesn't come as a surprise to me ... that seems like old news.  BUT, the article goes on to talk about how women who are overweight are more likely to consider their heavier look an acceptable one... if they have heavier friends.

Now, I am 5'6" and I weight 178.  I know it could be much worse, but it's not something I'm happy about.  Obviously, I need and want to lose weight.  My goal weight is 140.

Ok, so I can relate to this idea of keeping your weight on if your friends do too.  I have several "bigger" friends who are always the ones to say, "ohhhhh, you look great! You don't need to lose that much weight.  At 140 you will be SKIN AND BONES!"  Uhm, yeah right.  Are you kidding!?!?!  140 is a healthy weight goal for my height.  I think I will be "thin" but not "skinny"... if that clasification makes any difference.  Now, on the other hand, my thin friends (who look great at a healthy weight) are great and supportive when I say I want to lose weight.  They are the first to say, "good for you."  And they will say things like, "yeah, I really need to start doing **insert exercise of choice here**.  They GET IT!  They know what it's like to be at a good weight and to want to stay there.  But, it sounds like my "heavier" friends are trying to keep me on the overweight and unhappy train, you know, so they still have somebody to hang with on the bar car, apparently.

By the end of the article it gets down to the fact that we must love ourselves enough to want to take care of our bodies and be healthy!  WHAT A GREAT IDEA!  ;)

So, let's give ourselves a break already.  Pull out your Stuart Smalley lines and look in the mirror today, "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darn it, I'm going to be healthy!"

chick flicks and a big flop

Right now I am painting my kitchen... well, finishing it.  I started it over Thanksgiving break and ended up spending more time pealing wallpaper off the walls then actually painting them... **sigh**  But, I am finally done with student teaching and I turned in my portfolio today.  So, I thought it was time to get the brushes back out.  It's looking really good...

I live alone, so I often put movies on in the background as I do things around the house.  I just got done "listening" to In Her Shoes.  Now I'm on to Bridget Jones' Diary.  LOL  Which reminds me, it's almost that time of year to think of the big New Year's Resolutions!  Luckily, I'm off to a head start and have started some goals ahead of the January 1 crew.  However, my goal (see previous post) has been a big flop.  I started to think about scratching the whole things and moving on... BUT THEN... I just logged in and noticed that I had comments!!!  I was shocked.  It made me realize that there have been people (even if it's just one, whatever) reading my posts.  So, I have to get on the ball.  I mean, that's the whole reason I started doing this blog anyways... to keep my butt in gear... and to get it in shape!

So, tomorrow is going to be workout one of week one.  Which means, I'm going to have to give up chocolate for THREE MONTHS.  ;*(  It can be done... I've given it up for lent before.  But, that still sucks.  I like my chocolate!

Well, there's nothing like a few comments on your blog and a few girl power chick flicks to get you pumped up!  Love it!

Alright, I'm off to the kitchen to get back to painting... and listen to Bridget Jones, of course.

three... it's the magic number

So, I am certain that the reason all of my other weight loss attempts have failed are because they were...

1. UN-realistic
2. UN-specific
3. UN-fun

I am determined to make this "cheers to 25 years" challenge just the opposite.  So, my first goal is going to be sweet and simple.  It will be an exercise challenge.  Here are the terms...

30 minutes of cardio exercise
3 days a week for
3 weeks

My reward if I complete this challenge:  new walking shoes!
My punishment if I fail to complete this challenge:  No chocolate for three months!

I think we all seem to get stuck in that rut of setting goals that fall under those THREE categories up there... UN-realistic, UN-specific, and UN-fun.  What are some goals that you have set before that you've met?  Or what are some goals that weren't met?  How can we improve them and make them attainable?  How can we make our fitness and diet goals FUN?

here I go, here I go, here I go again...

girls, what's my weakness... FOOD!  ;)  (sorry, I had to start it off with a hit)

On March 5th, 2008, I will be turning 25 years old!  While I'd like to think that it will be an exciting day.  It has hit a nerve inside me that I am in my MID TWENTIES!  Tons of questions have started racing through my mind...

What am I doing with my life?  What are my goals?  Where am I going?  etc. etc. etc.

So, I have decided to start tackling some goals NOW.  There are many things that I have always wanted to improve about myself and my upcoming birthday has given my some much needed motivation.  One of the most important goals is my weight loss.  This is my blog that will track my success and hopefully find new friends who can help me along the way.

Thinking back on my life, I don't think I can remember a time in my life when I thought my size was acceptable.  I have always thought I was overweight, or just plain fat.  I know it sounds sad, but it's true.

This is the time that I will get myself healthy and happy.  Today, I will start to love myself inside and out.
